As you may have seen early last year, we acquired a new site behind the St Andrews Preservation Trust Museum, which we began working on to create our first Community Garden. The aim of the space was to allow StAndEN to grow food to donate to the North East Fife Community Hub, which would then be used in the Community Café to make delicious meals! We also looked to showcase how to maximise the space of a domestic garden to grow your own produce.
This new space was a former domestic garden, and we had a fantastic group of volunteers who helped us work on the area to prepare it for planting.
During the first few sessions, we managed to clear back some foliage and make space for planting some fruits and vegetables. Some kind members of the community donated seedlings, and we were able to make a start on planting. Most of the seedlings took very well, and throughout the season, we were able to harvest a reasonable amount of produce for the Hub! This was very exciting as we were unsure whether we would be able to do this in the first year.
Towards the end of last season, St Andrews Men's Shed made us some raised beds for the garden, which the Clean & Green team began weatherproofing & treating. These beds mean that the area is now fully accessible for everyone as they can be easily reached from the path, and they have ledges that can be sat on!
Looking forward to this second year of the project, we are really keen to get cracking on preparing the area for spring and early planting. We hope to increase production this year, which will be possible, especially with the raised beds.
It will be all hands on deck initially, and we are looking for some more volunteers to get involved this year. Our sessions are twice per week – Tuesdays from 10.30am – 12.30pm & Thursdays, 1.30pm – 3.30pm. There is no experience necessary – if you would be keen to come along to get involved and meet some people, please get in touch, as we would love to have you on board.
The start date will be on the 22nd February 2022. If you would like to know more or get involved, email laura@standrewsenvironmental.org and we will be sure to keep you informed!
